Cannabis testing requirements, state by state
There is no federal testing standard for state-licensed cannabis, so every state writes its own. One state requires a panel another skips. Action limits for the same analyte differ. Some require ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation before a lab reports a single result.

Method
How we check each state
- Start at the regulator. Each entry names the agency that licenses testing labs and links its site, plus the page that holds the testing rules where there is one.
- Read the rules themselves. Required tests and accreditation come from the statute or administrative code, not from summaries. The sources behind every entry are listed on its page.
- Date every check. Each state shows the day we verified it. We re-check every state every 6 to 12 months.
- Say what isn't verified. A state we haven't checked yet is marked “Not verified yet” and hatched on the map. Until then it shows the regulator link from our 2022 map, which may be out of date.

What labs ask about state rules
Why do cannabis testing rules differ from state to state?
Because each state regulates cannabis on its own. There is no federal testing standard for state-licensed products, so every regulator writes its own list of required tests, action limits, sampling rules and lab licensing requirements, and revises them on its own schedule.
Does every state require ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation?
No. Of the 43 states with a cannabis program that we've checked so far, 31 require it, 15 of them within a set period after a lab is licensed. Tick “ISO 17025 required” in the explorer's filters to see which, and open a state for the exact rule.
How current is this information?
Each state shows the date we last verified it against official sources, and we re-check every state every 6 to 12 months. States marked “Not verified yet” have not been checked; treat their regulator link as a starting point only.
